Unreel – Fragments of the Human Condition

This spring, I will be presenting a photo exhibition at the Spring Special Exhibition of the Kyoto Museum for World Peace, Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto.
Since I began working as a photojournalist following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, I have been fortunate to receive support from many people.
This exhibition presents, in a cross-sectional way, all of the projects I have undertaken over the past fifteen years, addressing themes such as war, nuclear disasters, and infectious diseases.
The title “Unreel” refers to the image of threads that have been tightly wound together gradually being unwound. Through this exhibition, I attempt to bring into view the often unseen landscapes behind historical events and the fragments of individual lives that have accumulated within them—connecting past and present, and reflecting on the landscapes we may not yet fully see and the world we will continue to move through.
The exhibition space has been designed by Keimu Konishi (miso), a designer known for spatial designs for KYOTOGRAPHIE – Kyoto International Photography Festival and many other projects. Together, we present the records I have been working on over the years in a new spatial form.

この春、京都の立命館大学国際平和ミュージアム春季特別展にて写真展を開催することになりました。
2011年の東日本大震災と福島第一原発事故をきっかけにフォトジャーナリストとして活動を始めてから、これまで多くの方々に支えていただきました。今回は、戦争、核災害、感染症などに関するこの15年間にわたる全てのプロジェクトを横断的に紹介する展覧会となります。
タイトル「Unreel （ほどく)」は、幾重にも巻きついた糸がほどけていく様を表しています。 事象の背景にある見えづらい風景と、その中で積み重ねられている一人ひとりの生の断片を浮かび上がらせ、過去と現在のつながり、私たちが見えていないかもしれない風景とこれから歩んでいく世界をつなぐ試みです。
また、当展覧会はKyotographie・京都国際写真祭をはじめ多彩な空間設計を手掛けてきたデザイナー小西啓睦氏（miso)がデザインを担当し、これまで私自身が取り組んできた記録を新たな形で展開します。

The Kyoto Museum for World Peace, Ritsumeikan University, presents a photo exhibition by Kazuma Obara, a Japan-based photographer whose work has been exhibited internationally.
Obara began working as a freelance photojournalist in 2011 in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Encounters with workers at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant during his reporting led him to focus on documenting the lives of people whose existence often remains unseen within society. Since then, he has continued to photograph individuals living with uncertainty and pain amid events such as war, nuclear disasters, and infectious diseases.
This Spring Special Exhibition brings together all of the projects Obara has undertaken over the past fifteen years, presented in a single exhibition for the first time. The photographs traverse multiple geographies and histories, including the Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster; victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster; nuclear power plant workers; fishermen exposed during the Bikini hydrogen bomb tests; the postwar lives of children affected by World War II; the Roma minority amid the war in Ukraine; patients affected by COVID-19 and end-of-life care; and Hansen’s disease survivors and their families.
The exhibition takes its title from the word “Unreel,” suggesting threads that have long been wound together gradually coming undone. Obara’s photographs illuminate the often unseen landscapes that lie behind historical events, revealing fragments of individual lives accumulated within them. In doing so, the work attempts to unravel the connections between past and present, inviting viewers to reconsider the landscapes we may not yet fully see and the world we continue to inhabit.

立命館大学国際平和ミュージアムでは、日本を拠点に国内外で活躍する写真家、小原一真（おばらかずま）氏の写真展を開催します。小原氏は2011年、東日本大震災と福島第一原発事故を機にフリーランスのフォトジャーナリストとして活動を開始しました。その後、取材過程で出会った福島第一原発で働く人々との交友をきっかけに、存在が可視化されづらい人々の記録に取り組むようになりました。現在も精力的に、戦争、核災害、感染症等の渦中で不安や痛みをかかえて生きる人々の撮影を続けています。
春季特別展では、小原氏が15年間取り組んできた全プロジェクトを展示します。写真は、東日本大震災と福島第一原発事故、チェルノブイリ原子力発電所事故の被害者、原発作業員、ビキニ水爆実験で被ばくした漁師たち、第二次世界大戦下で被害をうけた子どもたちの戦後、ウクライナ戦争における少数民族ロマ、新型コロナウイルス感染症患者と看取り、ハンセン病回復者とその家族など、多岐に渡ります。
